What’s an 8th of Weed? Cannabis Terms Explained

Find out what an 8th (aka “eighth”) of weed is.

What’s an 8th?

An eighth (⅛) is a common weight measurement in the cannabis world. It’s shorthand for “one-eighth of an ounce of weed,” which equals 3.5 grams. When you hear a budtender or friend ask for an eighth at your local dispensary, they’re talking about this specific amount of weed.

Dispensaries and growers use fractions like “eighth” or “quarter” as an easy way to identify different quantities in relation to an ounce of cannabis. There are even larger measurements like “quarter pound” that describe weed in relation to pounds, instead of ounces.

Everything from a single gram to a quarter of an ounce to a pound of weed comes with a simplified, measurement-based nickname.

What does an 8th look like?

An eighth of marijuana can look different based on the cannabis flower’s bud structure. Generally, it’s enough weed to fill your palm or a small sandwich bag.

However, if the buds are dense, it might look like a smaller amount compared to fluffier, lighter nugs.

Is an 8th a lot of weed?

An eighth is a moderate amount. Those 3.5 grams of weed are enough for a few joints, blunts, or several bowls if you’re using a bong or pipe.

For many cannabis enthusiasts, different cannabis eighths can last a week or more, depending on their consumption habits. It’s a popular choice for those who want to sample a new strain without committing to a larger quantity.

Difference between an eighth and a quarter

A quarter is twice the size of an eighth, weighing in at 7 grams (¼ of an ounce). While an eighth is 3.5 grams, a quarter gives you more bud to work with, making it a better option if you have a higher tolerance or prefer not to visit the dispensary as frequently.

How much does an 8th cost?

The cost of an eighth can vary widely depending on where you are and the quality of the cannabis. In California, for example, you might pay anywhere from $25 to $60 for an eighth, with top-shelf strains being on the pricier end.

Prices also fluctuate based on factors like dispensary, local market conditions, and whether the cannabis is organic or has a high THC content.
